research topics are Sociology of the Middle East and Islam,
transformation, structural transformation, comparative study
of agrarian social structures, political sociology, and civil

Prof. Dr. Louise SHELLEY |

Prof.
Shelley very recently attend to George Mason University. Dr
Shelley was the founder and Director of TraCCC, and a leading
expert on transnational crime and terrorism with a particular
focus on the former Soviet Union. She was a Professor in the
School of International Service and also in the Department of
Justice, Law and Society at American University.
Dr.
Shelley received her undergraduate degree
cum laude
from Cornell University in Penology and Russian literature. She
holds an M.A. in Criminology from the University of
Pennsylvania. She studied at the Law Faculty of Moscow State
University on IREX and Fulbright Fellowships and holds a Ph.D.
in Sociology from the University of Pennsylvania. She was the recipient of the Guggenheim, NEH, IREX, Kennan Institute, and
Fulbright Fellowships and received a MacArthur Grant to
establish the Russian Organized Crime Study Centers. In 1992.
she received the Scholar-Teacher prize of American University,
the top academic award of the university.

Professor at Hacettepe University, Depertment of Political
Science and Public Administration and he has been carrying out
the duty of chairman of the depertmant and the Deputy Director
of The Centre for Strategical Research, Hacettepe University.
Mr. Caglar received his PhD degree from University of Surrey,
Guildford, England in Sociology with the dissertation "Recruitment,
Occupational Consciousness and Professionalism in the Turkish
Police". During June 2001 to December 2002, in Prizren
Regional Center, Regional International Trainer/International
Trainer Coordinator OSCE Mission in Kosova (OMIK). In addition,
Acting Senior Election Officer from 23 January 2002, to 14 May
2002, Prizren OSCE Office, OSCE Missio in Kosova (OMIC). The
main research areas, sociology of policing, violance, crime
and terrorism. He carried out many projects and published many
articles and five books. |

We regret to
announce the sudden home going of our colleague, Prof. Dr. Cihat
Özönder. This sad event occured on Tuesday 26th of July, in a
tragic car accident.
In the recent poll
executed 22th of July, 2007, He was elected as a member of the
Turkish National Assembly.
He was the
director of The
Institute of Turculogy Research and Strategical Research
Centre at Hacettepe University and also former head of the
Department of Sociology at the same University.
He had received his MA and BA
in 1971 and PhD. degree in sociology from Hacettepe University
(1979) and he had been lecturing for more than 25 years
at the University.
He was married
and sixty years old.

She is professor at
Hacettepe University, Faculty of Medicine and she received her
B.A and M.A on Child Psychiatry at Hacettepe University. Her PhD
in sociology is also from Hacettepe University (1993). She
worked and made some research at Edinburg and Harvard
Universities on adolescent psychiatry. Chief of Child and
Adolescent Psychiatry Association for seven years. The main
subjects of her studies is on the adolescent problem behaviors. |

She is currently a
Project Leader on Armed Conflicts and Conflict Management at
Stockholm International Peace
Research Institute (SIPRI). She is on leave of absence from
the Institute of World Economy and
International Relations (IMEMO), Russian Academy of Sciences
where she heads a Research group on unconventional security
threats at the Center for International Security. She is also a
guest lecturer on terrorism-related issues at the Geneva Centre
for Security Policy (GCSP) and serves on editorial boards of
journals 'Terrorism and Political Violence' (St Andrews Univ.)
and 'Security Index' (Moscow; Geneva). Her research and
publications focus on armed conflict management, prevention and
post-conflict peace-building, political economy of conflicts,
and unconventional (new) security threats such as terrorism and
transnational crime, particularly in conflict-related context. |

She is associate professor in the Counseling and Guidance
Program at Hacettepe University. She holds a bachelor’s
degree in psychology at Hacettepe University, and master’s and
doctorate degrees in Counseling and Guidance from the same
University. She has been working in the field of counseling
since 1984. Between January 2002- May 2003, she worked at the
University of North Carolina at Greensboro as a visiting
professor. She is interested in prevention at risk behavior,
wellness, counselor education, communication skills,
aggression and career counseling. She is author of a book in
the field of preventive counseling, many articles, and she has
translated numerous books and book chapters. |

Dr.Erdoğan recived
his undergraduate degree from Ankara University, Faculty of
Political Sciences, Department of Politics and Public
Administration. He holds an M.A. in Political Science from the
Ankara University Institute of Social Sciences. Mr. Erdoğan
received his PhD degree from University Ankara University and
Bonn University in political science with the dissertation "Turkey-EU
Relationship after the Cold War: 1990-2005”. He was scholar of
Konrad Adenauer F oundation
(1994-1998) and “Junior Fellow” at the
Center for European
Integration at University of Bonn in Germany (1998-2000).
He worked for the Press Department of the

Center (TraCCC) and has authored several articles on
criminality, corruption and policing. His doctoral
dissertation focuses on "coloured revolutions" in Post-Soviet
Space and their impact on organized crime. |

Education/Counseling Psychology, Ph.D.). He has twice served
as a member of the European Faculty of Boston University and
has trained U.S. military personnel in Spain, Germany, Belgium

Peace Studies,
Associate Professor in
Political Psychology at Liverpool Hope University, visiting
scholar to Hope’s partner University; Lock Haven in
Pennsylvania (USA) and a Research Fellow at the University of
St Andrews. He was awarded his BSc in Social Psychology and
Sociology in 1992, taught part-time from 1992 to 1996 and
received his D.Phil in 1998 from the University of Ulster; his
thesis studied the impact of political violence on moral
development. His research and writings deal with moral
development, and a number of topics located within social and
political psychology, mainly focusing on the conflict,
division and peace process in Northern Ireland and including,
just world beliefs, forgiveness, identity, ethnic memory,
violence prevention and concepts of war and peace. Dr Ferguson
is currently the chair of the Moral and Social Action
Interdisciplinary Colloquium (MOSAIC) and is part of an
Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) sponsored research
team tasked to co-ordinate and develop research dealing with
Northern Ireland after the Good Friday Agreement. |

Dr
Tamara Makarenko is an internationally recognised authority on
the interaction between organised crime and terrorism. Her
expertise was primarily gained from conducting field research in
emerging economies, conflict and post-conflict environments. She
has direct experience investigating related issues including:
the structure of criminal and terrorist networks with a focus on
financial sources, smuggling networks (i.e. arms and narcotics),
arms trafficking and weapons proliferation, dual use
technologies, and related political corruption.
She has authored over 75 academic and professional articles, and
has addressed over 90 audiences worldwide. She also regularly
briefs and advises corporate boardrooms, senior government and
security officials. For example, Dr Makarenko was an advisor to
the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Universal Adversary
project and National Planning Scenarios. She was also the
internal security advisor to the National Security Council of
Afghanistan, during which time she authored the first Afghan
National Security Threat Assessment.
Dr Makarenko graduated with a B.A. (Honours) in Political and
Strategic Studies in Canada, followed by a Master's Degree in
International Security Studies at the University of St. Andrews.
Her academic studies were completed at the University of Wales,
Aberystwyth with her doctorate on the crime-terror nexus. She
retains academic affiliations with the School for Advanced
International Studies, Johns Hopkins University; the Silk Road
Studies Programme at Uppsala University; the
Centre for the Study of Terrorism and Political Violence at the
University of St. Andrews; and, the Diplomatic Academy of London
at Westminster University. |
